Thank you to all participants of the 2016 Diversity Immersion Institute
Without question, our commonalities combined with our differences can truly affect positive change as we, together, discover solutions to the diversity and inclusion issues on our campus, in society, and in the world. The late Nelson Mandela believed in three critical components to any winning outcome -- “…Education, Respect, and Helping One Another.” The Libraries’ Diversity Immersion Institute and all of its participants demonstrated the value, the significance, and the wisdom of those three small words in conducting a winning diverse and inclusive program.
UMD Libraries’ 2016 Diversity Immersion Institute (2016 DII) was an enormous success and would not have been possible without the financial support, dedication, encouragement, and enthusiastic participation of our sponsors and supporters. This diversity initiative began as it ended; a definitive model for learning from one another, reflecting on known and unknown biases, understanding different perspectives, and putting into practice the importance of collaborative dialogue between various cultures for a common cause.
Without financial sponsors, the 2016 DII would not have been possible. We enthusiastically thank UMD’s Interim Dean of Libraries, Dr. Babak Hamidzadeh, Associate Deans of the Libraries, Mr. Daniel Mack and Dr. Gary White, Executive Director of Life Pieces to Masterpieces, Mr. Selvon Waldron, and Dr. Stephanie Timmons Brown, Director of the Maryland Institute for Minority Achievement and Urban Education. Additionally, UMD’s Black Faculty and Staff Association membership financially supported our novel program.
Please accept our sincere appreciation and heartfelt thanks, in whatever part you played, in making this an incredible diversity success story during the summer of 2016 at the University of Maryland Libraries. We can add with pride that UMD’s iSchool students were overwhelmingly pleased to have experienced the 2016 DII, and Life Pieces to Masterpieces’ Apprentices were introduced to the amazing possibilities of a career in librarianship!
